Electrical, control and instrumentation (EC&I) engineers help nuclear facilities and projects operate safely, reliably and predictably. What does an EC&I engineer do?
EC&I brings together three closely related areas:

Where EC&I skills fit across nuclear projects
EC&I capability is needed throughout the project and asset lifecycle.
During concept and detailed design, engineers define requirements, select equipment and develop control philosophies, schematics and cable information. They may also review supplier designs and resolve technical queries.
Installation and commissioning teams inspect equipment, test circuits and prove control functions. This can involve working with construction, mechanical, process and safety specialists to confirm that systems have been installed and configured correctly.
On operating sites, EC&I professionals support maintenance, fault-finding, modifications and obsolescence management. Decommissioning programmes also require temporary power, monitoring, remote handling controls and modifications to existing plant.
Potential employers include nuclear site licensees, engineering consultancies, equipment manufacturers and supply-chain contractors. Similar skills are also used in submarines, defence, utilities and other highly regulated industries.
PLC, SCADA and control-system skills
PLC and SCADA experience is useful for many controls-focused vacancies. A PLC executes control logic, while SCADA systems provide monitoring, alarms, trends and operator interaction. Depending on the position, an employer may look for experience in:
- developing or reviewing PLC logic;
- producing functional design specifications;
- configuring human-machine interfaces;
- alarm management and data acquisition;
- testing through simulation, factory acceptance or site acceptance;
- diagnosing communications, hardware and software faults;
- managing software versions and controlled changes.
Do not assume that experience with one manufacturer automatically meets every requirement. Check each advert for the specified platform, programming environment and required level of hands-on capability. Evidence of structured testing, documentation and controlled modification can be as important as familiarity with a particular product.
HV, LV and electrical design
Electrical responsibilities may cover low-voltage distribution, motor control, standby supplies, protection, earthing, containment and cabling. Some roles also involve high-voltage systems, but candidates should not present general electrical experience as HV competence unless they have the appropriate training and practical background.

- fault-finding and root-cause investigation;
- commissioning and acceptance testing;
- configuration, change and document control;
- multidisciplinary design reviews;
- work in regulated or safety-conscious environments.
Technicians moving towards engineering roles can emphasise practical diagnosis, testing, permits, maintenance records and improvement work. Career changers from manufacturing, utilities, rail, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals or defence should translate their experience into nuclear-relevant themes without claiming nuclear knowledge they have not yet gained.
Some defence and nuclear positions may require security clearance or eligibility to obtain it. Requirements differ, so answer screening questions accurately and check the individual vacancy rather than assuming an existing clearance is always mandatory.
